"Letters to Prisoners" is a current project exploring differences that arise in baited conversation and natural conversation with inmate pen pals. The project further explores of my interest illustrating appropriated conversations. I will be writing under a pseudonym and remaining anonymous to my pen pals. I will not be sharing my intentions to illustrate and display our conversations. I anticipate and encourage audience discomfort and suspicion over my public use of my private conversations. My baited conversations will concern details of inmate tattoos. I suspect the descriptions will be detailed, personal and specific creating something intimate and universal. My natural correspondence may provide more narrative images, distanced from the general experience. I will not be displaying correspondence with the images displayed at the exhibition of this artwork.
Maven Dooshe is a fictitious, but active, band created by artist Kevin Strickland. Band member roles Maven and Dooshe were filled by artists Mooshe Nickerson and Dave Valeza for the band's premiere live performance-- an album release double-booked at the same time and place as the opening reception for Strickland's MFA thesis show “Zero Heroes” (2007).
The album consisted of field recordings and chatter from discarded cassette tapes mixed with sound from low-view YouTube videos, voice-generation software and simple keyboard melodies. The album was violently promoted in the weeks prior by online video podcasts that took visual cues from propaganda and social media cliches. Band members kept silent on artist statement and intention to increase expectations across wide audiences. Despite the hype the band's album was never played during its release party. A collection of cassettes from popular 80s musicians were played in its place. Few attendees purchased the album as it was released exclusively on cassette. In place of music sales the band sold “merch” including trapper keepers, stickers, and clear plastic backpacks leftover from earlier projects by Strickland.
The resulting hullabaloo of dancing, shouting and purchasing comically reinforced themes present but understated in Strickland's featured paintings. “Zero Heroes” is an oil painting series of trading cards with identifying imagery and text removed. The resulting subtle white canvases portrayed the worthlessness of cards to a public outside of collectors and enthusiasts.
The Maven Dooshe project continues as a collaborative where any artist may post found sound under the name Maven Dooshe. Current contributions focus on pure appropriation of sound with little editing or musical additions.
Artist duos are encouraged to perform as Maven Dooshe during karaoke nights as karaoke nights are a widely accepted "IRL" forum for stolen and misused sound. It spreads the band's mission: the opportunity to listen again.

Miss Who (2009) is a modified version of the popular board game "Guess Who." The mystery people of the game board have been
replaced with a catalog of 1982 Miss Georgia pageant contestants. All the contestants look strickingly similar and it derails the game mechanics. The classic
version is a game of elimination where you ask your opponent 'yes' or 'no' questions to narrow down the flock and correctly identify your
opponent’s mystery person.
In "Miss Who" the questions have to become subjective:, “Is your girl a virgin?” “Did your girl get her braces off before middle school?”
“Is your girl afraid of her father?” “Is your girl a cat person?” “Does your girl wear contact lenses?” “Did she forget to mention ‘world peace’
in the pageant?”
For its fusion of high and low art it has been awareded the high honor, the Allee Willis Certifikitsch of Authenkitschity!
A question was asked to Facebook: "Why there always be a bro so offended by minimalist art that he rejects the lesson
behind it?"
A: Because bros are used to looking at beer labels, which reject minimalism and are packed with directed imagery and typography.
B: Maybe it's because they come to class stoned and eat smelly potato chips loudly and need validation for this minimal lifestyle.
C: Bros like everything pimp.
So began a movement to "update" and "improve" great minimalist art for the current generation: a generation that likes things
fast, accessible and glittery.
Pimp my Minimalist (2007) is a collaborative project between students and staff using website Blingee.com as its exclusive tool to
add computerized glitter to minimalism in the form of animated .GIFS

Pet Pop Pair (2009) began as seven day show "Curating an Art Show" presented in the empherial format
of MySpace bulletin. MySpace bulletins were locked to friends and diplayed only ten days. I streamed ten online pet videos to ten melodramatic
songs by band Magnetic Fields. Funny pet videos projected and extracted deep sentimentality from the music of Stephen Merrit
in a critical take of the overwhelming crisis of intentional irony among art circles.
Revisiting the process a year later once the YoutubeDoubler mashup tool surfaced the statement shifted.
The video streaming the song was now visible simutaneously with the pet video. Heavy symbolism, allegory, metaphor and hyperbole of the
Official Music Video was marked unfitting by the cute animals. Viewer attention is conflicted and once again brought to focus
on the primary media of the Official Music Video: the pop song.
Dually subtext drawn from the lyrics juxaposed to pet videos become more viseral and fitting than the intentional subtext given by video directors.

"Curating an Art Show" I will not attempt to fix or recreate pieces that are broken as source matertial online is deleted or changed.
Deletion and change are inevitable parts of online culture.

Choreography and timing are not lost when the original 70s funk track is replaced with alternative ballad "Runaway Train"
by Soul Asylum. The presentation of Runaway Train (2007) synchs so well with the new track it dramatically hightlights popular songwriting structure across genre of music.
As time has passed the video has taken on the role of living protest for Fair Use on the internet. Every 9-12 months the music is silenced
on this video by copyright claims. I contest these claims through the YouTube appeals process and am granted use of the track again as it
is non-profit commentary that uses a small portion of the song in a way that does not replace an audience need for the original
copyrighted source.
